The correlation between good health and business success is evident. Struggles with one’s well-being, mentally or physically, don’t disappear at the doors of your office; they linger like an invisible cloak, slowly draining you of energy, focus, and joy.
Our team here at DMC Atlanta knows firsthand that prioritizing our health is a conscious choice, and one that has to be made daily. It’s why we’ve incorporated a “Healthy Body, Healthy Business” mantra at work and encourage our teammates, through different incentives and recognition, to take care of themselves physically, mentally, and spiritually.
Here’s How
The first step in improving your life and career is to reflect. How often do you schedule exercise into your weekly routine? Are you conscious of what you’re feeding your body and your mind? Do you have a bedtime you try to maintain or do nighttime irregularities plague your sleep cycles?
The average person needs seven to nine hours of sleep a night.
The effects of a full night’s sleep are felt immediately. You’ll wake up the next morning with more zest, and a brain that has had the opportunity to repair from the previous day’s activities = a more alert business professional.
Next, your eating habits. What you put into your body affects your energy levels and overall physical health, as well as how efficiently you concentrate and problem-solve. The key to optimizing your brain function is to have a balanced diet. It’s okay to grab fast food once a week as long as it’s balanced later with vegetables, fruits, and lean meats. How often have you gone to lunch and maxed out on a burger and fries only to come back to work with no energy? The key is to know your body and to pay attention to what it needs to thrive!
Now, what about exercise? If you’re working from home or sitting all day, how are you taking care of yourself during this time of social distancing? Even if it’s for 30 minutes a day, get active! At DMC Atlanta, we reimburse our team $50 monthly towards their gym membership if they work out 16x in 30 days or pay fully for their membership if they work out 24x in a month. We often host in-office yoga classes to show our team firsthand how easy it is to highlight their physical health. Our logic is simple; a healthy body yields a healthier mind. In addition, if our employees get sick, we offer telemedicine options to get them the relief they need. Why? Simply because we care.
Now, let’s concentrate on the importance of self-care and mental health. For years, discussing mental health openly was frowned upon. In many parts of the world, it’s outright taboo. At DMC Atlanta, we support organizations, like Movember, who champion for men’s mental health concerns. We know to lead others properly, we have to be open and honest about what depletes us and what fills our cup. For some, all that’s needed to replenish is an hour of yoga a day or thirty minutes of guided meditation. For others, it’s art, dance, or therapy. No matter what method works, it’s essential to your overall success to put time and energy into acknowledging your feelings without having to act on all of them.
When you feel healthy, mentally and physically, you are in a proactive headspace, not a reactive one. The keys to success are simple but start internally. By getting a full night’s rest, eating smart, and putting your mental health first, you are setting yourself up for true, lasting long-term success. Add 1 part healthy body + 1 part healthy mind, and you’ve got yourself a healthy business…one sure to withstand the course because it’s fortified from every direction.
